August 19-23: Hero & Henry's Blog

News from Hero and Henry

 August 19th (Monday)

On Monday, we started the day with reading a short book out of our literature book. The book was about a selchie named Grayling, who is rescued by a fisherman and raised to an adult. A selchie is a seal that turns into a human on land. When the  fisherman was drowning, Grayling jumps in to save him and turns into a seal, but he still comes by once a year to tell the fisherman and his wife stories. We also made a goal booklet for our long-term and short-term goals. We started our science notes today.

August 20th, (Tuesday)

Today, we started our devotion journal slides, where we type about our relationship with God. In literature, we made a story sequence chart for Grayling. In PE, we played Capture the Flag. Our memory was also due today. Today, we had block social studies, which means we had two periods of SS, while Mrs. R’s class had block english. In math, we started the diagnostic.

August 21st (Wednesday)

On Wednesday morning, we started with chapel. For literature, we started a story called

Dragon Dragon. The story is about a king having a dragon in his kingdom who keeps causing trouble around the kingdom. Then we did a vocab worksheet on some of the unique words in the story. We started our line art where we drew school supplies and made lines to fill them in. G math’s science test was also today. T math had stations in their math block.

August 22nd, (Thursday)

Thursday, we made notes about our predictions for Dragon Dragon, because we didn’t finish the book yet, we started our acting project too. In social studies, we did a map grid activity.

Today, we swapped blocks, so G math did math, while T math did the vocab quiz in science.

From Miss D & Mrs. R:

Thank you so much for attending our parent information meeting Thursday night.  Students now have over a full week under their belts and a sense of how classes and transitions go.  We are getting better at routines and organization with fewer reminders. Students are learning how to think first of others (pushing in chairs, clearing the table for "company," waiting to be acknowledged before asking the teacher a question, and letting others go first - tough one!!).

Happy First Week! Anna and Hero's Blog of the Week!!

First, Ms.Dubberke explained the middle school rules and when to interrupt her during class. She told us about how the directions will be on the whiteboard every morning with a meme and what materials to get out. If we didn’t know what to do or get out, the directions would always be on the board.

When we were done, we wrote and drew on a paper how she would get to know us. Then, we played games to get to know Ms.Dubberke. We did brain teasers before we went over to Mrs.Riemenschneider’s class.

In Mrs.Riemenschneider’s class, we learned about imports and our homework was to find 3 imports at home.

What's Happening in Grade 6?

Lots and lots of "here's how we do things" this week: how to organize a binder, how to use a planner, how to switch classes and travel efficiently, class jobs. and  looking out for each other.  The students have been good listeners and getting right into the routine.

One of our big goals this year is for students to become more independent in their learning. This news blog will update you on current happenings, but in 6th grade I do not publish upcoming assignments or tests.  These are things your child will be tracking in their assignment planner.  If an individual student needs more organizational help, I will work one-on-one with that student.  I plan to publish this blog weekly on Mondays.  I will send you a remind when the blog is updated!

Student Council

The STUCO interest meeting will be held on Tuesday, 8/20 from 3:00-3:30 in Mr. Weinhold’s room. If your child is interested in joining Student Council, they should plan on attending. If they are unable to be at the meeting, please have your child email Mrs. Donner and Mr. Weinhold to let them know they would like to join. Students who do not contact these teachers may lose the opportunity to join Student Council for the 24-25 school year. Thanks!

 Mrs. Donner

More info: Student council is organized in project based committees.  Students may join a committee that is not during their sports season.  They do things like Red Ribbon Week, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Early Childhood chapel, and Jr. High Dances. It's a great leadership learning opportunity!
